The Vista Ridge Metropolitan District's next regular Board election is Tuesday, May 4, 2027. Three of the five seats on the Board of Directors are up, each for a four-year term. Any eligible elector of the District can run; the deadline to file is February 26, 2027.
The last two Metro District elections, in May 2023 and May 2025, were cancelled because no more candidates filed than there were seats. The candidates were declared elected without a vote, so all five current directors began their current terms unopposed. The last contested election was in May 2022, when four candidates ran for two seats.
The current Board
- Michael Lund, President: term ends May 2027 (seat on the 2027 ballot)
- John Z. Ocwieja, Assistant Secretary: term ends May 2027 (seat on the 2027 ballot)
- Todd Sargent, Assistant Secretary: term ends May 2027 (seat on the 2027 ballot)
- William Mathe, Treasurer: term ends May 2029
- Scott Wood, Secretary: term ends May 2029
The three seats ending in 2027 were filled in 2023 and the two ending in 2029 in 2025, both times without a contested vote. The Board adopts the District's budget and mill levy, approves its contracts and sets its water rates. See the Metro District page and the finances dashboard for what it oversees.
Who can run
You can run if you are an eligible elector of the District: a person registered to vote in Colorado who either lives in the District, or owns taxable property in the District (or whose spouse or civil union partner does). Under some conditions a person buying taxable property in the District under a contract also qualifies. You do not have to live in Vista Ridge if you own taxable property here.
How to run
- Get a Self-Nomination and Acceptance Form from the District's Designated Election Official (DEO). Forms can be filed from January 1, 2027.
- Fill it in and sign it. Your signature must be witnessed by another person registered to vote in Colorado, who also signs and adds their address.
- Return it to the DEO by the close of business on Friday, February 26, 2027 (67 days before the election).
- To run as a write-in candidate instead, file an Affidavit of Intent to Be a Write-In Candidate with the DEO by the close of business on Monday, March 1, 2027 (64 days before).
- If, at the close of business on March 2, 2027 (63 days before), there are no more candidates (including write-ins) than seats, the election is cancelled and the candidates are declared elected. That is what happened in 2023 and 2025.
Key dates
- Fall 2026: the Board adopts a resolution calling the election and appointing the DEO (it called the 2025 election on October 24, 2024). The Board meets for the 2027 budget hearing on October 22, 2026.
- Late January to mid-February 2027: the District publishes its Call for Nominations with the DEO's name and contact details.
- January 1 to February 26, 2027: self-nomination forms can be filed.
- March 1, 2027: write-in affidavit deadline.
- March 2, 2027: if not contested, the election is cancelled.
- May 4, 2027: Election Day, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
How residents vote
Only eligible electors of the District can vote (registered Colorado voters who live in the District or own taxable property in it). This is a District election, separate from Town of Erie and county elections; it does not appear on your November ballot.
The Board decides in its resolution how the election is run. The last contested election (May 2022) was a mail ballot election: ballots were mailed to eligible electors and had to be returned by 7 p.m. on Election Day. If 2027 is instead held at a polling place, you can ask the DEO for an absentee ballot; in 2025 the deadline to apply was the close of business on the Tuesday before the election. Make sure your Colorado voter registration shows your current address at GoVoteColorado.gov.
